First founded in 2024 by royal historian Robert Lacey. Paper Argosies set out on a mission to revive forgotten treasures, written and illustrated by artists of times gone by.
Inspired by the author/artist Claud Lovat Fraser, who was writing from the trenches in 1916, the painter-turned-poet visualised children at home making paper boats to float imaginary treasure galleons into the lakes and rivulets of the English countryside:
O master mariners! whose seas
Are millers’ pond and parson’s stream,
Who send your paper argosies
To lands the further side of dream . . .
In this scenario, Lovat suggested, the mysteries and morals of nursery rhymes can be seen as veritable treasure fleets of rhyming magic.
Nursery Rhymes with Pictures – by Claud Lovat Fraser marks Paper Argosies’ literary debut.

Nursery Rhymes
Bestselling historian Robert Lacey brings together 82 of our most beloved nursery rhymes in this beautiful gift book.
Robert was inspired to create this collection by the original drawings of Claud Lovat Fraser (1890-1921), who originally sketched his eye-catching images for his newly born daughter Helen. The illustrations in this modern volume have been vividly updated by artist Ben Coppin.
Alongside the traditional nursery rhymes, Robert writes on the magic of nursery rhymes, the meaning of their not-so-childish nonsense and the history behind them.
Printed in Wales using the latest eco-friendly materials, this delightful anthology includes a ribbon bookmark.
